![]() Separating these layers are pockets of air referred to as "dead zones". Materials Īccording to NFPA 1971: Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting (and most equivalent standards in other countries), all turnout clothing must have three components: an outer shell, a moisture barrier, and a thermal barrier. Many fire departments have school presentations intended to familiarize children with firefighters and their appearance so as to ensure they will be calm and cooperative during emergencies. It has been noted that young children in dangerous circumstances like a building fire may be further frightened by the appearance of firefighters equipped in full turnout gear. The advantage of this combination is overlapping coverage to create a protective envelope for the firefighter to operate in. Modern sets use a trouser/jacket combination. Turnout clothing can consist of a combination of trousers, suspenders, boots, and a jacket. ![]() Turnout trousers hanging on a hose drying rack after getting wet at a fire call NFPA 1975's main purpose is that no part of the uniform garment “ignite, melt, drip, or separate” when exposed to a heat of 500☏ for 5 minutes. The United States adheres to NFPA 1975: Standard on Emergency Services Work Apparel. These shoes are required to be fitted with safety toes and puncture-resistant soles in most countries in case the firefighter goes out on a call that does not require his/her turnout gear. Turnout gear is to be worn over the station garments during any call that a firefighter is called upon.Īnother aspect of the station uniform is the station safety shoes, commonly referred to as work boots. Its purpose is to provide comfortable clothing that will not become an obstruction when a firefighter is required to put on their turnout gear. The first component of firefighting equipment is the uniform that a firefighter wears around the station. The National Fire Protection Association publishes the requirements for fire protective clothing under NFPA 1971: Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, which specifies "the minimum design, performance, safety, testing, and certification requirements for structural fire fighting protective ensembles and ensemble elements that include coats, trousers, coveralls, helmets, gloves, footwear, and interface components." Station uniform Modern turnout jackets and pants are made of fire-retardant fabrics, mainly aramids such as Nomex and Kevlar or polybenzimidazole (PBI). ![]() The combination of modern triple-layer turnout gear with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), personal alert safety system (PASS) device, and modern communications equipment is intended to provide comprehensive protection against smoke, heat, water, steam, flashovers, and even direct flame for a short time. This system has since been replaced by the modern combination of a jacket, pants with suspenders, and shorter rubber or leather boots, although some departments still wear the old style of gear. This interface of the boot and coat left a large gap of protection against fire. They were worn with long rubber boots called "three-quarter boots" which reached above the firefighter's knees. Earlier rubber coats were much longer than today's modern turnout jackets, reaching down to a firefighter's mid-thigh. These layers later developed into the thermal and flame protection liners found in today's turnout gear. Early coats had felt or wool liners to provide warmth in winter. įirefighting trench coats, made of leather or canvas and later rubber, were the precursor to modern turnout jackets. The helmet featured eight rib sections on the dome for added rigidity and a long rear brim that channeled water away from the wearer's neck. The helmet had a brimmed front to affix a face shield it was usually adorned with a company name and number. ![]() This helmet is immediately recognizable today as the "New York" style of helmet, and little has changed in terms of its shape. Gratacap recognized the need for a well-designed helmet that provided maximum protection to the wearer. The modern firefighter's helmet was developed in 1830 by luggage maker Henry Gratacap, who was also a volunteer firefighter in New York City. In the early 19th century, felt caps were worn of various designs and were more for decoration than service this early headgear did not provide any protection against flame or head injury but did keep water off the firefighter's face. Early in the history of firefighting, a firefighter's outer clothing was more for warmth and dryness than for protection from fire. Most fires were fought from the outside of buildings, and structures were rarely entered. Historically, firefighters have not had access to the same level of protective clothing used today. ![]() McVie’s expert deployment of electric piano, organ, and clavinet still sounds futuristic, while also nailing the classy yet groovy spirits of the ’70s. She also wrote “You Make Loving Fun,” a song whose backstory is endlessly mythologized. This includes the 1987 hit “Everywhere,” a luscious ball of harmonies that always seems to pop out of nowhere and that is currently soundtracking a commercial for Chevrolet’s electric vehicles. In addition to “Don’t Stop,” McVie wrote, well, half of the songs on Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits, and had more singles credited solely to her than any other member of the band. But that sheer ubiquity wouldn’t have happened without McVie. But she was the center that held together a band that was ever imploding in one way or another.įrom the day one fans, to the people for whom the mega-selling Rumours soundtracked their Rick Moody–esque key parties, to the children conceived at said key parties, to the contrarians who insist (possibly correctly) that Tusk is the real masterpiece, to the punks and hipsters that eventually admitted to themselves that Fleetwood Mac is as great as their parents said, to the casual music fans whose record collection can be counted on one hand, Fleetwood Mac’s reach was as wide as that of any artist you could possibly name. Maybe she wrote your favorite Fleetwood Mac song, and maybe she didn’t. Everyone loved Fleetwood Mac, one of the most enduring rock bands to ever exist, and everyone loved Fleetwood Mac in large part because of Christine McVie. ![]() The outpouring of grief has been tremendous. ![]() It’s also very arguable that “Don’t Stop” isn’t even her greatest song, but that’s McVie for you.Ĭhristine McVie passed away Wednesday, of an undisclosed illness. (It didn’t work out so well in the end, but this coronation wasn’t widely seen as ominous then.)īut more than anything, Clinton’s choice served as a sign of the sheer cultural dominance of Fleetwood Mac, and the genius of Christine McVie, who wrote “Don’t Stop,” a song that would change the career trajectory of her band, the ’70s as a whole, and the face of American political campaigns. But the choice of “Don’t Stop” served as a sign of a changing of the guard, a signal of Clinton’s relative cool factor, and marked the ascendancy of the boomer generation. Presidential candidates were and are usually situated on a sliding scale of squareness. Thirty years and countless arguments about baby boomers, neoliberalism, triangulation, ’90s nostalgia, and abuses of power aside, it’s still a jarring, singular moment in American history. ![]() North America (United States, Canada and Mexico)Įurope (Germany, UK, France, Italy, Russia and Turkey etc.)Īsia-Pacific (China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam) This analysis divides the market into categories based on producers, geographical areas, types, and applications. This is a subreddit for the free and open source music notation software MuseScore! ![]() Instead of focusing on the torment of how Ellie came to realise that she's immune to the virus, it let you in on the good times she and Riley spent together, and how Riley's influence shaped Ellie in some specific areas of her character. But instead of simply retelling what we already know, they opted for something a little more uplifting, even in the face of a tragedy. I was glad they didn't show the death scene, because what point would it serve? We already know she was going to die, we already know how that relationship came to an end. The main game basically spoils 95% of the DLC. Also we still don't know how Ellie got into the Fireflies.īTW: I think someone who hasn't played TLOU should play the DLC first. I feel like that moment would have been ridiculously sad. I came to see Riley die and all I got was an abrupt ending where both were sitting around and Ellie crying a bit. "I'll kill his wife! All his friends! Burn his damn house down." Oh right the Unforgiven reference was pretty damn good. But the ending in Left Behind is a little too happy (and obviously they could've made some pretty severe choices at the end to make it less so). The main ending of the game is ridiculously good, like so far beyond every other game story and most other movie stories (Probably the third best movie this year) so ambiguously not good, not hopeful, not inspirational. The ending is eh, too uplifting for The Last of Us. I'm sure there's some villain from the Postman guy out there who will figure it all out, hopefully he doesn't come across Joel and Ellie in the process though, those 2 crazies could murder a 20,000 man army. Women are less likely to be murderous monsters (Ellie's got that torch though) so it's a tougher sell, thus the only comfort is manlove. Pretty recurring theme across the whole game actually the hunters are too stupid to reproduce and become quite bullish as a result. Being gay in a post apocalyptic environment doesn't give much hope for humanity barring some agreement to reproduce. Best part was the random collectibles about the helicopter crew. Riley has like spider senses or some shit, but I still got skillz. Should be fun to go through it again on Survivor. Played through it, good stuff (it's not too short assuming you explore the environment). I'm loathe to actually get the platinum in this game because I don't want to play through it with a guide feels too gamey for this game of games. They made normal infected smarter, which is a little weird seems like that inevitable horde mode is In contrast to the main game I thought the collectibles were pretty easy to find. So, yeah, it's pretty fucking There's a fight with nigh 25 infected/humans have fun with that. ![]() But I think that would probably my only criticism, and it's barely even what I'd call a criticism really. Though watching both the infected and the hunters withstand a copious amount of damage from each other before dying was a bit weird. The carousel, the origins of Ellie's joke book-not to mention her desire to whistle-tinkering around in the halloween store, ''playing'' the MK-spoof via Riley's narration, and-probably my favourite snippet-the photoshoot!Įven the combat portions were made to feel slightly different, with you sometimes able to manipulate the infected to then force them to battle it out with the hunters. ''We eat together, we sleep together, we shit together''.Ī lot of great moments peppered throughout in general, too. The mini-story of the three medics was also well done, and nicely tied into the theme of living for your loved ones and sticking by them through better or worse. Which is good, because I at first thought it was purely as an excuse to splice in some combat, so I was happy to see it served more of a purpose. That, and it was to show the results of Riley's invaluable advice she bestows onto Ellie during the end. ![]() It was to no doubt contrast a more playful Ellie of then, and the much more serious and battle-hardened Ellie during the winter portion of The Last of Us. ![]() What was also surprising is how they decided to tie Ellie's past with the moment where she's scavenging for supplies. The thought began to run through my mind a little, specifically during the photoshoot segment, but then of course it becomes a lot less ambiguous later on. It made for an interesting semi-origin story for Ellie, and it was especially interesting to learn that the relationship between her and Riley was growing to become more than a friendship. I was at first a little reluctant when I noticed the price of £12, but it was completely worth it. For anyone who isn't already aware, the single-player DLC for The Last of Us is available! Worth buying for “Tramp” alone, yet packed with easy-rolling soulful wonders, King & Queen wears its crown lightly. But don’t go thinking this is karaoke: here are two of the greatest soul singers of their generation, backed by a mixture of MGs and Bar-Kays. And “Ooh Carla, Ooh Otis” closes the show with a spot of chunky boogie the same crowd would surely enjoy. Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home To Me” sounds like something they’d perform in a bar on a Sunday afternoon. “Are You Lonely For Me Baby” takes Bert Berns’ ballad and injects a spunky dose of Southern sass into it. Just listen to the tenderly swinging “Let Me Be Good To You,” which loosely resembles Carla’s smash hit “B-A-B-Y” with an added dose of blues, or the sock-it-to-you cover of Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston’s “It Takes Two” this is music nobody appears over-concerned about, and is all the better for it. Hence King & Queen sounds like a more natural Otis, one who is singing for fun, a quality the album has in abundance. He sounds cheerful, like he’s not trying to sing the shorts off the listener. Perhaps because the album isn’t going to be entirely his responsibility, or because the project was sold to him as primarily an entertaining affair by Stax boss Jim Stewart. Otis appears more relaxed than usual on King & Queen. The record was massive in 60s discotheques and inspired many covers, including The Mohawks’ celebrated “Champ.” Further hits emerged from the King & Queen sessions, which took less than a week to complete, in the shape of “Knock On Wood” and “Lovey Dovey” the whole album consisted of cover versions, with the exception of the closing “Ooh Carla, Ooh Otis.” But that’s alright, as Otis said in “Tramp.” Nothing wrong with these songs, or the performances. Otis, no stranger to overalls, is perfect in the role as the butt of Carla’s rebukes. The major hit was “Tramp,” which grew from Lowell Fulson’s funky raw blues to an entertaining girl-versus-boy argument in Otis and Carla’s hands. The two singers contrast beautifully: Otis is all guttural, a growling bear-like alpha male, and Carla sensual and sophisticated (she was studying for her English Masters at the time). King & Queen, the last studio album Otis completed before his death, in December 1967, is an underrated record, perhaps because it was lighthearted in tone and was soon overshadowed by Otis’ sensational appearances with the Stax-Volt Tour in Europe, at Monterey Pop, and his tragic sudden passing. But could they have complemented the great Otis Redding quite as well as Thomas? Understood his every nuance, and batted back his loving words and jibes quite so powerfully? In this instance, Thomas ruled. While Carla was undoubtedly Stax’s leading lady, any number of other artists could have claimed that title when it came to the wider world of soul. While you might be hard-pushed to justify Carla Thomas’ billing as the Queen Of Soul on King & Queen, you wouldn’t find a lot of quibbling over the regal title being bestowed upon Otis Redding in 1967. %MSG-w XrdAdaptor: file_open 0 12:00:37 CET pre-eventsĭata is served from cern.ch instead of original site eospublicĠ 12:00:38 CET Successfully opened file root:////eos/opendata/cms/Run2015D/DoubleEG/MINIAOD/08Jun2016-v1/10000/00387F48-342F-E611-AB5D-0CC47A4D76AC.rootīegin processing the 1st record. ![]() If you are using the CMS open data container, you can do the following:Ġ 12:00:35 CET Initiating request to open file root:////eos/opendata/cms/Run2015D/DoubleEG/MINIAOD/08Jun2016-v1/10000/00387F48-342F-E611-AB5D-0CC47A4D76AC.rootĢ11209 12:00:35 722 secgsi_InitProxy: cannot access private key file: /home/cmsusr/.globus/userkey.pem If you are using the VM, this helper scripts does not work out of the box, so skip this part and go directly to the next section.
